From 1861 to 1865 the United States was engaged in a civil war known as the War Between the States. The Union was pitted against the Confederate army. In many cases, it truly was brother against brother.

On April 12, 1861 Confederate forces attacked a U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter in South Carolina and President Lincoln responded by calling for a large volunteer army to help defend the North.

During the first year of the war, the Union army assumed control of the border states and moved to establish a naval blockade of the South as both sides massed their armies and resources in preparation for the coming battle.

Battles such as those at Shiloh and Antietam resulted in casualty numbers that were unprecedented in U.S. military history. With Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1861, ending the practice of owning slaves in the South was made the primary goal of the war.
