In 1864, Ulysses S. Grant was leader of the 533,000 men of the Union Army. At that time the largest army in the world. He became President of the United States 3 years after that thanks to popularity from being an outstanding General and winning the war.

The weapon of choice for both sides of the war was a single-shot, muzzle-loading rifle. While not terribly accurate, it was extremely deadly and produced devastating results. It alone account for over 80% of all wound during the ware.
