The Kepi was officially called a forage cap and then was nicknamed 'bummers cap' by troops. They named it that because if was often described as shapeless as a feedbag. It became the most common form of cap worn by U.S. regulars and volunteers during the American Civil War. It was also worn by Confederate troops in dark blue, various shades of grey and butternut.
Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, who wore his plain dark blue round visored forage cap and most pictures and portraits show him with his civil war kepi on. He was wearing his kepi when he was mortally wounded on the first evening of the battle of Chancellorsville on May 1, 1863.
